Cemetery Time Line – Goulburn

1820:    Governor Macquarie extended the limit of settlement for the colony, to Goulburn.

1828:   First street plan for Goulburn was drawn up. [Located near the current Goulburn Gaol.]

1831:    Oldest headstone in St Saviour’s Cemetery.  John Weakley aged 3

1833:    A new town plan was surveyed a few miles south. [Current CBD location]

1839:    Oldest headstone in Mortis St Cemetery, Alexander Fraser aged 50.

1841:    Census Goulburn Population 655

1844:    First burial in the Jewish Cemetery.

1846:    Census Goulburn Population 1200

1856:    Goulburn Court House registers Deaths & Place of Burial [records until 1918]

1860s:   Most of the Jewish community left Goulburn for Sydney.

1875:    Land set aside on Governor’s Hill for New General Cemetery.

Not used until c1890

c1888:   St Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Kenmore [on Middle Arm Rd] opened.

c1890:   Goulburn General Cemetery [Gorman Rd] began use as burial ground.

c1902:   Dedication of Goulburn General Cemetery

c1903:   Mortis St Cemetery formally closed.

c1920s:   New plots not available in St Saviour’s Cemetery.

c1930s:   Some burials continued in existing family plots in Mortis St & St Saviour’s.

1943:   Last burial in Jewish Cemetery

1947:   Last burial at Mortis St Cemetery in a family plot

1957:   Last burial at St Saviour’s Cemetery in a family plot
